On 25 November 2024, within the scope of the “Life Energy from the Seas” social responsibility project organized by the Marine and Aquatic Sciences Application and Research Center (DENAM), a presentation titled “Life in the Sea, Life with the Sea” was delivered by Deputy Director Prof. Dr. Asu İnan at the Ihlamur Konağı Nursing Home and Elderly Care Center. The presentation included reflections on the historical development of seafaring in human history, Turkish maritime heritage, the importance of seas, marine pollution, and artistic interpretations inspired by the sea.

DENAM Director Prof. Dr. Lale Balas; Advisory Board Member Prof. Dr. Can Balas; Research Assistant Eray Eser; Research Assistant Gökçe Ömeroğlu; and undergraduate students also attended the event and engaged in conversation with the residents. The gathering created an opportunity for three generations to come together, interact, and share experiences.

During the presentation, Prof. Dr. İnan described the evolution of maritime activities in Türkiye’s history and introduced different forms of marine life found in our seas, while also answering questions raised by the residents. The event, held in an interactive and enjoyable format, was followed with great interest. Through inspiring stories drawn from maritime history, the presentation highlighted the role of seas in human civilization and their significance today. Such activities not only help residents spend their time meaningfully, but also keep their curiosity and engagement with the world alive bringing them the “life energy” of the seas.

Following the presentation, representatives of the Ihlamur Konağı Nursing Home and Elderly Care Center thanked Prof. Dr. Asu İnan for her talk and the information she shared and expressed their wish to meet again with our valued elders at a future event.
